The Pros and Cons of Airbrush Makeup

Should you use airbrush makeup on your wedding day?

Are you confused as to which kind of makeup you should choose for your wedding day? I’ve been asked so much lately if airbrush makeup is better than traditional makeup application. It used to be something I offered because it was asked for and when I started out 14 years ago (wow!) I thought it was a cool tool to use. I don’t think one is superior over the other, makeup is very personal….so don’t label me an airbrush hating monster, ha-ha! I’m just here to give a little perspective and opinion as to why I choose not to use it as my go to. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it for yourself!

PROS

The finish is flawless

It gives an impeccably smooth finish

It's less product and quick to apply

Airbrush makeup requires less product and it gives you quick coverage because it’s sprayed on.

Lasts all day

Airbrush makeup is silicone based which is durable and sweat proof making it great in humid conditions. Touch ups are limited. Which I think is a major selling point for airbrush and why brides gravitates towards it.

It's easy to layer

If you’re looking for full coverage or light coverage it can be easily done

CONS

Airbrush makeup is more expensive than regular makeup

This makeup is a little more expensive and more involved the price is higher. If you are sticking to a budget this may not be an option.

Not good for all skin types

If you have hydrated, well-moisturized skin, airbrush looks amazing. If not it can be quite dry, flakey, crack or look flat. Traditional makeup has a more radiant look and can be better customized by your artist to fit your skin needs. If you have scarred skin or skin with active breakouts, Airbrush makeup will have a hard time covering. Especially if the skin is dry and textured. Regular makeup application might be better suited for acne-prone skin types! I personally love being able to blend products together to fit my clients needs and skin types. Some areas of the skin are naturally more hydrated than others and I’m able to customize and address each part differently. Airbrush makeup cannot do this and I think for me this is the biggest reason why I don’t use Airbrush anymore.

Your shade options are a little more limited

The color options are limited as well as the brands that carry airbrush makeup. It may not be an impeccable blend.

It can be hard to re-blend

If you think you’ll shed some tears (I know I would), airbrush isn’t for you. If you end up tearing and makeup streaks, it's difficult to fill those spots in with more airbrushing (you would have to start completely over). Filling it in with regular makeup will not work and end up making your skin look uneven and cakey. This makes it a lot harder to re-create.

Do you think the pros outweigh the cons?

Personally, I choose not to opt for airbrush because I can achieve better personable results with my technique of application. If you want to try airbrush makeup, I recommend a trial with a skilled professional. You also want to be sure to prepare your skin for application the right way. Find out how to with this blog post.
